According to information obtained by the BBC, nearly 6,000 purpose-built student rooms have been constructed in Glasgow over the past ten years. According to the figures, twenty student blocks have been completed since 2015, the majority of which are in the city center. In addition, Glasgow City Council granted planning permission for the construction of an additional 3,222 student beds the previous year, which is significantly more than any number in the previous decade. Despite this, the city is having trouble keeping up with the rising demand. According to data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), there have been more than 20,000 more students in the city over the past ten years. It sent a letter to the owners of over 2,500 vacant properties earlier this month, requesting their return to use. In the meantime, enrollment at the city’s universities has continued to rise. According to HESA data, Glasgow University’s student body has grown by more than 12,000 since 2015. In addition, the number of students enrolled at Glasgow Caledonian University and Strathclyde University has significantly increased over the past ten years, by approximately 3,000 and 5,000, respectively. At the beginning of this academic year, a Glasgow University-co-authored report suggested that the city had a shortage of more than 6,000 student housing units, putting thousands of students at risk of being homeless.
